Franz Essl among "Highly Cited Researches" 2025

The 2025 list of the world’s most cited researchers includes eleven scientists from the University of Vienna, representing a wide range of disciplines – among them, Franz Essl from the Faculty of Life Sciences. This recognition is awarded to researchers whose publications rank among the top 1% most cited in their field, underscoring their influence within the global scientific community.

Each year, Clarivate compiles its list of Highly Cited Researchers to highlight scientists whose work has made a significant and lasting impact in their areas of study. The selection process combines citation data with qualitative analysis and expert evaluation. In 2025, Clarivate recognized 6,868 Highly Cited Researchers from 60 countries and regions worldwide.

 

About Franz Essl

Franz Essl is an Associate Professor at the Department of Botany and Biodiversity Research at the Faculty of Life Sciences. He specialises in research on the effects of global change on species and habitats and is a member of the management team of the Austrian Biodiversity Council. As a leading expert in the field of alien species research, he investigates the impact of the introduction of non-native animal and plant species on global ecosystems, including in terms of global species extinction.
