Out-of-school experience for Viennese children

28.06.2018

Children of the Wiedner Gymnasium in Vienna visited the Naturpark Kaunergrat in Tyrol to learn more about the alpine environment.

The initiation of the project was Maria Wielscher's diploma thesis “Out- of- School experience "Biology of alpine organisms": a concept for a week- long field excursion for secondary School", supervised by Barbara-Amina Gereben-Krenn and Peter Lampert.

In the program the students got to know the characteristic species and typical plant communities, but mainly general ecological concepts were conveyed on the basis of the alpine environment. They learned to use simple methods of collecting and evaluating data, such as plant mapping, working with pit-fall traps to analyze the epigaic species composition or using the transect method and working with living animals like frogs. The most exciting part for the kids was the hike to and on the glacier. [more]
